 | Coin collecting Hoarding coins due to their money value goes back to the beginning of coinage, collecting them as art pieces was a later development. The Indian Head one-cent coin was produced by the United States Mint from 1859 through 1909. It was designed by James Barton Longacre, an Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint. The funny thing is how it came to be. The director of the Mint, James Ross Snowden, wrote a letter on November 4, 1858, to Secretary of the Treasury Howell Cobb, complaining about the previous penny, the Flying Eagle cent. He didn't like the design. read more>> |

 | Coin Condition Coin condition is paramount. In the competitive world of coin collecting, the condition of a coin is crucial to its value. A high-quality coin can be worth many times as much as a poor one. Collectors have created systems to describe the overall condition of coins. An older system describes a coin as falling within a range from "poor" to "uncirculated". A newer method, called the Sheldon system, used primarily in America, has been adopted by the American Numismatic Association. read more>> |
