Known as the "Hobby of Kings", modern coin collecting is generally believed to have begun in the fourteenth century. Notes of Roman emperors having coin collections are also known, but it is not clear whether these coins were collected or merely savings collections. Probably the most collected coin ever is the United States Lincoln Penny.

I have met and befriended many other coin collecters all over  the globe.  One thing I have noticed is that collectors of national coins tend to specialise in the coins of their own country.

Have you ever wondered about the fact that money, in America,  states IN GOD WE TRUST. I mean I'm all for it. I think it's a beautiful statement, and I pray for it to be true.  The use of IN GOD WE TRUST has not actually appeared over the years. The motto disappeared from the five-cent coin in 1883, and did not reappear until the Jefferson nickel in 1938. In response to a popular demand, Congress ordered it restored.  Since 1938, all United States coins bear the noble inscription.

Image Indian Head Cent

One coin that is extremely popular is the Indian Head Cent. I would even say many people start out their coin collecting careers with this great coin.  The Indian Head one-cent coin was produced by the United States Mint from 1859 through 1909. It was designed by James Barton Longacre, an Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint.  The funny thing is how it came to be. The director of the Mint, James Ross Snowden, wrote a letter on November 4, 1858, to Secretary of the Treasury Howell Cobb, complaining about the previous penny, the  Flying Eagle cent. He didn't like the design.
